“Do not call me Naomi, call me Mara, for God has dealt very bitterly with me.” (Ruth 1:20)
Have you ever been so beaten down that you wanted to disappear? I think this is what Naomi was trying to do when she changed her name. To know her is to know her story. She had lost everything; her husband and both of her sons. And she was returning to the only place she could…… home. She was returning there with a different name, and I think maybe, in hopes of making the old her disappear into the crowd of people. But, when she got home, they knew her as Naomi. When you go home, they know you…
Have you ever just wanted to make the old you disappear? Have you ever wished that you could go home again? Maybe you can! “Home. The place where the table is sticky, the laughter is loud, and each of the kids’ growth is marked on the kitchen door frame. It’s where we’ve loved hopefully more than we’ve fought. It’s where we’ve gathered to both celebrate and grieve. It’s safety and serenity and the place we both lose and regain our sanity. It’s but a speck of a place on the map. And yet our hearts find their way back to it every time.” (Lysa TerKeurst)
But, maybe, you can’t go back home. Maybe your “home” wasn’t such a nice place or even a good memory. Maybe your home is owned by someone else. Maybe your home was a veritable madhouse. Maybe “home” wasn’t home at all. But, it doesn’t end there… we all have a home waiting for us. If you trust Jesus as your Savior, He has prepared a place just for you! A home like no other you have ever known! “In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.” (John 14:2)
Naomi’s story didn’t end there. Sure, she had lost a lot…. A LOT, and I’m sure she felt defeated. I think we all have felt defeated at some point in our lives…. we’ve all camped out at “Camp-I-give-up” and probably more than once. But Naomi had gained a loyal daughter-in-law who chose her; who chose to stay with her. She hadn’t lost. God was just about to show her just how great He is! And, He can do the same for YOU!
I love Naomi and Ruth’s story, it is one of my most favorites. These two women had every reason in the world to give up…..BUT GOD (don’t ya just love that?) But, God showed up and took them on an incredible journey together. He can do the same for you!
